This week’s art project is inspired by Cruz Ortiz‘s El Jesse Amado, which features fellow collection artist Jesse Amado reclining in a chair surrounded by plants painted in Ortiz’s signature bold, graphic style. Ortiz says, “These works are not just about the image you see but really are about the time spent with the artist and sitter. The conversation with Jesse was the art and for me when I see this painting I’m not only thinking about every brushstroke and the decisions that allowed [it] to exist on the canvas but also the experience of looking directly at Jesse and hearing him talk.”
Ortiz inspired the Ruby City staff to create our own portraits of friends and family members by borrowing some key elements of his paintings.
